The EFFC Chairman- I Would Rather Resign Than Work Against My Conscience And The Rule Of Law

The executive chairman of EFCC (Economic and Financial Crime Commission), Abdulrasheed Bawa has sworn to step down on his position if anyone wants him to act against the rule of law and his conscience. He also mentions that the allows EFCC to inspect bankers’ assets.

According to a Nigerian news headline today, Bawa made everyone aware of his position on his appearance in an interview with the NTA- Nigerian Television authority. Mr. Wilson Uwajaren, the EFCA’s Head of Media and Public Relations released the minutes of the interview yesterday. He said that the fear of God and rule of law are his guiding principles. Also stated that “I will keep doing what is right. The commission I’m overseeing will continue to respect the rule of law.

"If someone asks me to do something contrary to my conscience or the rule of law, I will resign my appointment." He said that it is corruption that hinders the sustainable growth of the country and acts as a burden. He said that everyone should deal with this kind of threat. He mentioned that there is no going back to the instruction which states that all bankers should affirm their assets before June 1, 2021. He said: “The laws allow the commission to investigate the assets of officials, including bankers.

There is already a law termed as Bank Employees Declaration of Assets Act 1986. By this, it does not mean that the bankers need to declare the asset to the but needs to be explained to the enforcement agencies. It will be demanded on June 1, 2021. He reminded Nigerians of the hero-worship of money bags and added that this attitude needs to be changed in Nigeria.

By this, he meant that everyone has a habit of worship the rich and people who have a status in the society but no one bothers to question them about the source of having that amount of money. To fight corruption, all stakeholders need to be involved which includes community as well as religious leaders along with others. They would also be engaging in public education at a mass level to make people aware and ways to evade corruption in all its methods.

Bawa, who vowed to tackle corruption within his permissible limits, mentioned that fighting corruption is not that easy and shouldn’t only be done by EFCC alone. He urged everyone to stop supporting corrupt people in society as it glorifies corruption. On questioned about the corruption cases in the court all across the country, Bawa replied that EFCC is progressing to ensure criminal conviction and repaying the victims if anything has been illegally acquired. He said, "Our lawyers are fine and the judiciary is great too" Every corruption case that comes to the court is recorded as a public document and anyone can access it. EFCC keeps the public informed about their activities through media trials as an action to keep the land clean and has been covered under Section 6 of EFCC Establishment Act 2004.
